It is very important to correctly measure the crankshaft size of the engine that you are replacing.  Vertical crankshaft engines are measured from the bottom of the mounting ring to the end of the crankshaft.  Some times people will place a ruler next to the crankshaft and measure the exposed portion extending through the oil sump pan.  This will result in a wrong crankshaft length. Remember to use 2 rulers, a small square, etc. and measure from the bottom of the mounting ring.  See diagram below.
